Charles J. Driscoll

Charles J. ''Chuck'' Driscoll (91) of West Brighton, Staten Island, New York passed away on January 4th, 2023 of natural causes surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 31st, 1931, to Charles and Madlyn Driscoll. A talented athlete who excelled at baseball, basketball, and hockey as a youth. After graduating St. Peter�s Boys� High School in 1949, he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies to a Minor League contract. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War years. He married the love of his life, Elizabeth ''Betty'' Young, in 1955. After discharge from the U.S. Coast Guard, he had returned to play for the Phillies in the Minor Leagues and left to join the NYPD in 1954. In 1956, he was sworn into the FDNY where he served faithfully for nearly 40 years, attaining the rank of Captain. He was a member of some of New York City�s busiest units, including Rescue Company 1, Ladder Company 18, Ladder Company 77, and Rescue Company 5, where he was the first commanding officer. With his family, he spent his summers at Cedar Grove Beach Club, where he served as President of the Board. He was a member of the American Legion, Staten Island Baseball All-Timers, FDNY Holy Name, Emerald Society, and Retirees' Association. He coached basketball at Moore Catholic High School, and founded St. Rita�s basketball program. After retirement from the fire department, he spent his winters with Betty in Ormond Beach, Florida. He was an avid golfer who was longtime president of Staten Island Seniors' Golf League. Aside from being an athlete, he spent his later years developing his artistic abilities, often giving various creations to friends and family, and even wrote a book, as well as a song. He loved to cook, and made a mean cocktail. Those who know him will remember him as an accomplished storyteller. He will be truly missed and remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Survived by wife of 68 years, Betty, son Charles & Kathy, son Denis & Pat, daughter Joyce & Mike DeForest, and son Paul & Sue. Grandchildren Denis & Brittany, Jenny, Michael & Jamie, Elizabeth, Dylan & Carolina, Allie & Mike, Kevin & Stephanie, Jake, Steven, Timmy, and Meghan. Great Grandchildren Diego and Lily. Brother John ''Ronnie'' & Judy. Funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please make donation to FDNY Family Transport or St. Peter�s Boys' High School. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday at Our Lady of Good Counsel located at 10 Austin Pl Staten Island, New York 10304. Interment will follow in St. Peters Cemetery, Staten Island, NY. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, January 6, 2023, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.
