Charles J. Schmitt,

Charles Joseph Schmitt, Sr, 98, of Eltingville, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Born on May 2, 1927 in Staten Island, New York, he was the son of the late Viola (Biggs) Schmitt and the late Charles Joseph Schmitt. Charlie, as he was always known, was born and raised in Staten Island. He attended Curtis High School and he was an Army veteran. During his military service, he was a chauffeur for Joe DiMaggio while stationed in Panama. Charlie kept his roots here when he settled in Eltingville after marrying the love of his life, Frances, and having their beloved two children, Charles and Carol. Charlie was an electrical engineer with Con Edison, a job that he took great pride in. A hard worker, Charlie was very well respected by his peers, and he greatly enjoyed planning and running retirement celebrations for his colleagues. Charlie retired from his engineering position with Con Edison in 1989. Charlie enjoyed many hobbies. He was an avid golfer, bowler, mechanic, and reader. He was a devoted sports fan, watching baseball, football, and golf. He loved rooting for the New York Yankees, the Kansas City Chiefs, and Tiger Woods. He loved watching Turner Classic Movies, especially those starring Fred Astaire and Bette Davis, dining out with his fellow Con Edison retirees, and trips with family and friends to Lavallette, NJ, and Woodloch Pines Resort. Charlie was the beloved husband of the late Frances (Ryan) Schmitt, who sadly passed away in 2018. Loving son of the late Viola (Biggs) Schmitt and the late Charles J. Schmitt. Devoted father of Charles Joseph Schmitt, Jr, and the late Carol (Schmitt) Cutler. Beloved grandfather of Michelle Schmitt-DeBonis, the late Charles Joseph Schmitt, III, and Amanda (Schmitt) Hoyman. Adored brother of the late Viola (Schmitt) Dohlmar and the late Linda (Moselek) Schiavone. Charlie will be remembered fondly for his outgoing and friendly nature and amazing devotion to everyone he knew. The loss of Charlie will be felt deeply in the hearts of everyone who loves him-from his closest neighbors to his lifelong friends, and to his family, who loved him more than words can say. A Funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc. located at 28 Eltingville Blvd Staten Island, New York 10312. Interment will follow in St Peter's Cemetery, Staten Island, NY. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.
