Giovanna DeCaro

Giovanna DeCaro, age 85, passed away Thursday evening, February 27, 2025. She was born on May 07, 1939 in Porto Empedocle, Agrigento, on the southern coast of Sicily, a daughter of the late Vincenzo and Grazia (nee Buscemi) Sarullo. Giovanna was affectionately known as Gina by all who knew & loved her. At the age of 17, she immigrated from Italy with her parents and siblings, settling in Brooklyn, New York in 1956, where she later married the love of her life and raised three children. Gina spent many years working as a talented seamstress in New York before embracing entrepreneurism and purchasing her shop, New Utrecht: Cards & Things, which she owned and managed. Gina and her husband Gino later relocated to Philadelphia alongside their daughter, where she resided for the remainder of her days. Gina was a figure of strength, poise, and independence, with a true talent for, and love of, gardening, crochet, and needlework. Gina used her artistry and love to create countless blankets, bassinet covers and custom dresses, costumes, and outfits for her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren throughout her lifetime. Throughout her life, she embraced, relied on, and celebrated her faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She spent much of her time reading scripture and in prayer. Gina was preceded in death by her loving husband of 35 years, Giacamo (Gino) DeCaro; her eldest son, Joseph DeCaro and her younger brother Giuseppe Sarullo (Maria). Gina is survived by her loving sisters Rosa Scala (Salvatore), and Maria DeCaro (Salvatore), her son Vincent DeCaro (Lina), her daughter Emily DeCaro Smith (John), her grandchildren Gino DeCaro (Teresa), Christina Sacco Voeglie (Jeremy), Adriana Sacco and Charlie Sacco, her great-grandsons, Lincoln Voeglie and Peter Sanchez, and many cherished nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Holy Child Church located at 4747 Amboy Rd Staten Island, New York 10312. Entombment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Gina's honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org
