Janet A. Smith

Janet A. Smith (nee Sferlazza), of Staten Island, NY passed away on August 26, 2025 at Richmond University Medical Center. She was born August 18, 1953 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Catherine (Romano) Sferlazza. Her parents moved from Brooklyn and built their home in Great Kills in 1957 across from P.S. 8. Janet graduate from Tottenville High School in 1971. She worked as a secretary in NYC at her first job with The International Nickel Company and the law firm of Cleary Gottlieb Steen and Hamilton. She ended her career at AT&T, located at the Teleport in Staten Island. Janet loved bird watching, the Adirondack Mountains, water lillies, Atlantic City, Hallmark Christmas movies, reading, cooking and baking for her family and friends. She was also a devout catholic who loved worshiping at St. Clare Church. Simply said, she enjoyed being a homemaker and felt that getting old was a real privilege and and a bonus in life. As she always used to say ''enjoy it as much as you can and appreciate all and everyone around you''. To make a long story short, she has left this world gracefully and thankful to her loving son, Matt, and many wonderful cousins and friends who made her life so special and enjoyable. I'm in the shining stars in the night sky - I'm on a floral scented breeze - I'm on the sparkling light dancing upon the lake - I'm in the pine scented forest of upstate - when you laugh and smile I'll be there, and most of all, you are in my heart and I yours. To my son Matt - I am forever so grateful to you. You were more than any mother could have asked for or even hoped for in a son. You were truly my ''wingman'', always there, so kind, so patient. You made my life worth living. I want to thank you, Matt, for always being my ''wingman''. You were there every step of the way - hospitals, doctors and trying so hard to keep me going. The best thing that ever happened to me was the day you were born. God truly blessed me with you. I gave life to you, BUT YOU gave me the true gift of love. Matt told me to do a recording so I can thank you all for being here now that my time is done. So thank you for remembering me. Janet was the beloved wife to the late Alfred Smith. Loving mother to Matthew Smith, who made her life so worthwhile and was a real blessing. She was the dear sister to the late Annette Greco. Devoted aunt to Dominick Greco and cherished great aunt to Lucas Greco . The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd. (at Eltingville Station), Staten Island, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at St Clare Church located at 110 Nelson Ave Staten Island, New York 10308. Cremation will be private.
