Mary McCusker

Mary Jane (Jean) McCusker (nee-McGovern), 85, was the heart of her family; Mother of 7, Grandmother of 18 (Kevin, Liam, Mari, Meghan, Danny, Timmy, Patrick, Shane, Mark, Brieann, Samantha, Philip, Brendan, Daniel John, Cassie, Victoria, Steven and Leo and Great Grandmother of 3 (Kevin, Jolene and Lorelei). Born and raised in Derrygonnelly, Northern Ireland, she completed her studies at Belfast City Hospital as a Registered Nurse and midwife. Upon her marriage she immigrated to Canada and then settled in Staten Island, New York. She resided in the house that “Phil” built. She worked as a nurse for 30 years in Richmond Memorial Hospital in the Maternity ward, Emergency Room and the Outpatient clinic. She was the founding charter member for the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians - Division 4. Preceded in death by her husband Philip – Jean was the beloved mother of two sons, Kevin and Sean and 5 daughters, Mary Brandt, Brenda Darcy, Eileen Martino, Patricia McCusker and Siobhan McCusker. Her fondest memories were of all of us, sitting around the kitchen table singing Irish songs, while Dad played his accordion. She loved celebrating all the holidays with her family and especially looked forward to the Annual Staten Island, St. Patrick’s Day parade. Moms favorite pastimes were reading, knitting, crocheting, trips to Atlantic City and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be remembered for her endless love, her ever present humor and for her ceaseless energy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 6, 2017 at Our Lady Star of The Sea located at 5411 Amboy Road Staten Island, New York 10312. Arrangements Include Private Cremation. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York. In Lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's name may be made to the St. Columcille Irish Cultural Center's ongoing goal to raise funds to purchase property for a new building.
