Peter J. DeGaetano

Peter J. DeGaetano, 91 of Greenridge passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Staten Island University Hospital North in Staten Island. Born August 12, 1931 in New York, NY he was the beloved son to the late Anthony and Lena (Ladara) DeGaetano. Peter a Korean War Veteran honorably served his country after being activated from the National Guard to the United States Army, in January of 1951 serving almost 2 years over seas in Korea as a battlefield medic. Following his discharge from the US Army Peter continued to serve his country in the National Guard for another 30 years, a testament to his love of his country. Peter received his Bachelor Degree in Psychology, for which he was extremely proud of. Peter met and married the love of his life his wife Mary in Brooklyn, NY. Together Peter and Mary raised their two loving children Peter and Juliet Ronan. Peter was a New York State Corrections Officer and dutifully served the at the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility in Staten Island for over 27 years before his retirement. Peter had many hobbies, in his down time Peter loved writing music, some of which was sung in churches here on the island. Peter and Mary were members of the former St John Neumann Church. Peter loved playing the lotto, one of his favorite pastimes, He was an avid editorial writer, submitting many editorials to the Staten Island Advance that were published on a regular basis. Peter was quick with a joke, and had a great sense of humor, one which will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Peter loved to socialize whether hosting parties or joining others at get togethers Peter was always in for a good time. and in the quiet moments Peter simply enjoyed a smooth scotch, Johnny Walker Double Black to be exact, to just sit and reflect. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary J. DeGaetano who passed away in 2009. Loving father of Peter DeGaetano, and Juliet Ronan. Adored father in law of John Ronan. Cherished grandfather of Samantha Becerra and her husband Lazaro and Jessica Ronan-Frisch and her husband Elliot. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2023, and Sunday April 30, 2023 at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 AM on Monday at St Thomas the Apostle- St Joseph- St John Neumann Church located at 50 Maguire Avenue Staten Island, New York 10309. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
