Rafaela Marino Burgos

Rafaela Marino Burgos, 94 of Middletown, New Jersey formerly of Staten Island passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2019, at Bayshore Nursing Home, Holmdel. Born Saturday, January 10, 1925 in Manhattan, she was the daughter of the late Antonio Marino and the late Maria Torres Marino. Rafaela graduated Washington Irving High School, NY in 1943 before attending and graduating from Hunter College in 1950 with her BA in Sociology. Rafaela went on to receive her Master's of Science in Education form Herbert H. Lehman College in 1978. A lifelong educator Rafaela began teaching in PS 154 in the Bronx before moving to Staten Island. Here on the Island Rafaela taught in PS 14 and PS 41 from which she retired. Rafaela was a member of Sociedad Naturista Hispana (Spanish Colony) and was past President of Agrupacion Femenina Hispana-Americana. In her free time Rafaela enjoyed many activities, quilting, doll collecting, crossword puzzles as well as writing. Rafaela cherished trips to the theatre and museums, indulged in sketching and spent quiet moments sky-watching. Rafaela was exuberant and passionate, and she loved her profession but more than anything she was devoted to her family. She was the devoted wife of 59 years of Herman Cid Burgos, who passed away in 2008. She was the loving mother of Sylvia M. Burgos-Toftness, Catherine Burgos, Irene Burgos, and Christopher Burgos. Adored mother in law of David Toftness, Robert Falotico, and Roseann Pokoluk. Dear sister of the late Alicia Rodriguez and the late Esther Marino. Cherished grandmother of Samara Lyn Pitre and Dewey Mathis, Rachel Lee and Benjamin Lee, Elisabeth Messina and Chad Messina, Dessa Wander, Marela Nieves, Joshua Nieves, Michael Falotico, Maxwell Wander and Jesse Krim, and doting great grandmother of Grace Messina, Logan Messina, and Heidi Berglund. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:45 AM on Tuesday July 2, 2019 at St Clare Church located at 110 Nelson Ave Staten Island, New York 10308. Interment will follow in Brigadier General William C.Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, NJ. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM on Thursday, June 27, 2019, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.
