Robert Shapiro

Robert Shapiro, 68 longtime Eltingville resident and retired NY City Police Officer, died Saturday at home in the presence of his loving family. He is the son of the late Sol Shapiro and the late Eleanor Maddalena Shapiro. Born and raised in Park Slope Brooklyn, Robert graduated from John Jay High School. He grew up rooting for the New York Yankees and his favorite player Mickey Mantle. Robert retired after a 20 year career with the NYPD, working 18 years in the 70th precinct in Brooklyn and the remaining 2 years in the 123rd precinct, Tottenville. As a police officer Robert taught crime prevention in Tottenville High School. He also worked several jobs at a time to provide for his family. Robert will be remembered for his wit, personality and dedication to his family. He provided great love and support for his 3 sons, who were always his top priority. He was loved by his many friends and co-workers. Robert was a kind hearted man who always made the effort to help others. Robert enjoyed exercising at the gym and was regularly recognized by friends and neighbors jogging throughout the neighborhood. When Roberts children were younger he was actively involved at Great Kills Little League managing their baseball teams. Robert also took great pride as a baseball umpire for high school and men's league games. Robert and his wife enjoyed their annual winter vacation to Florida, as well as regular summer vacations to Saratoga and Baltimore Harbor. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Linda Shapiro (Guadagna) He was a devoted father to Three sons, Robert Shapiro, Mark Shapiro and Matthew Shapiro. A cherished grandfather of 4 grandchildren. Dear brother of Gerald Shapiro; Funeral from the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals (at Eltingville Station) on Tuesday December 9the, 2014 at 11am. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 PM Tuesday at Holy Child Church, 4747 Amboy Rd Staten Island, New York 10312. Private Cremation to Follow. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Monday, December 8, 2014, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.
