Caroline A. Calandriello

November 14, 1918 - January 11, 2022

Caroline A. (Benak) Calandriello Nov. 14, 1918 - January 11. 2022 passed away at home under the care of VNSNY Hospice and her daughter and son-in-law at the age of 103. Born in Bessemer, Pennsylvania daughter of Slovak immigrants she was one of 12 children. She came to NYC at the age of 15. She worked as a personal child care provider and then in the food industry. She was introduced to her husband Joseph A. Calandriello by mutual roller skating friends in Central Park in 1936 and they were married in 1938. They lived in Manhattan. They moved to Queens in 1954 and then to Staten Island in 1970 purchasing a Mother/Daughter High Ranch home with their daughter and son-in-law in Great Kills. She became a homemaker when their daughter Caroline was born. She learned to sew, crochet and knit. Making many beautiful pieces. She even made her daughters white velvet wedding gown, Maid of honor dress and three bridesmaids dresses along with her dress with matching coat. Roller skating brought life long happiness to her and her husband and when he retired in 1978 they skated four days a week at various rinks in Staten Island, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They made many wonderful friends with their skating companions. Widowed in 2001 after 63 years of marriage she carried on and skated until the age of 96. She was admired by and was an inspiration to all. Caroline was regarded as an exceptional person and a true role model and hero. Mom, Grandmother, and Aunt she was her families joy, and very much loved. Survived by her daughter Caroline Jewett, Son-in-law Guernsey Read (Jerry) Jewett, Grandson Christopher his wife Leslie Miller Jewett, Grandson Brandon his wife Nancy Spence and many nieces and nephews. The family requests that memorial donations in Caroline Calandriello's name be made to the charity of your choosing. Funeral Services for Caroline will be private.
