Helen Niederhasuer died peacefully on Saturday may 1st, surrounded by family at the age of 90. Born Helen Ann O'Keefe in the Bronx, New York, she moved to Staten Island as a young girl in 1947. She was predeceased by her parents John & Helen O'Keefe and her husband Donald Niederhauser who died suddenly at the age of 60 in 1994. As a young woman she was very active in dance and competitive roller skating in the 1950's participating in competitions and worked as a telephone operator for the New York Telephone Company for many years until her marriage In 1961, to her husband Don a native Staten Islander. She was a long standing parishioner of St Charles Church where she was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and volunteer at St Charles School. Following her husband's death she resided with her son James, daughter-in-law Melanie and their family and moved to New Jersey in 2000. Her love for her family, the large extended O'Keefe family, her Irish heritage, her dogs and beautiful crafts sustained her in her later years. She was a beloved and dedicated grandmother who will be remembered for always being there to read a story, complete a puzzle and make many unique and creative Halloween costumes. She is survived by her daughter Helen Sullivan( Mike), Dorothery (John) and son James (Melanie). Six grandchildren, James, Daniel, Caroline, Patrick, Michael and Tara and her beloved dog Bea. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater New Jersey. http://www,alz.org/nj A Mass of Christian Burial will will be held at 10:15 AM on Wednesday at St Charles Church located at 200 Penn Ave Staten Island, New York 10306. Interment will be in Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, NY. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York. Due to the current Pandemic a strict 50 person in room policy is in effect, as well as a maximum of 200 people permitted in Church. Due to the current pandemic circumstances please note: We do not accept deliveries from outside vendors for bakery products, fruit baskets, and floral arrangements until further notice. Floral Arrangements can be purchased from our in house floral designers who work under the most stringent sanitary conditions which include temperature checks, mask wearing, distancing and protective clothing.
