Mara Malatestinic Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Mara Ann Malatestinic, 54, of Staten Island, New York passed away Sunday night June 26th, 2022, at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, in the company of devoted family. Mara was born at home July 31, 1967, in Brooklyn NY to Sandy and Tony Malatestinic. The family moved from her grandparents brownstone into their new Staten Island home in August 1967. Mara was the youngest of three sisters, Patrice Malatestinic, and Gayle Malatestinic-Haug. She leaves behind her mother, sisters, nephew Zachary Haug, niece, Katie McCray, grand-nephew Colton McCray, and her loving, devoted husband of 28 years, Ernie Vaglio. Mara grew up in Pleasant Plains; she attended Tottenville High School, Rutgers University, and she earned her Master of Education degree from The College of Staten Island. She taught at PS 19 for 25 years, specializing in early childhood education (pre-K through grade2). She was a gifted, distinguished, and dedicated educator. She truly loved teaching and was devoted to her students. Mara also loved walking along the beach near her Princes Bay home, visiting the New Jersey Shore, traveling, caring for rescue animals, eating out and attending shows/cultural events with her family and friends. Mara had a beautiful countenance, a dazzling smile and an enormous heart. Taken too soon, she will be sorely missed by family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives she touched. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 AM on Thursday at St. Thomas The Apostle Church located at 6135 Amboy Rd Staten Island, New York 10309.
