Michael J. Ryan, 87 of Staten Island passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born Monday, June 12, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Matthew Ryan and Mary Cunnane Ryan. At 14, Michael moved from Brooklyn to Staten Island. On Staten Island, Michael attended and graduated from Tottenville High School. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Michael worked for the New York City Department of Sanitation, where he was the Borough Superintendent. He later became the Director of Operations for the Staten Island Landfill. Michael was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Henry Stolzenthaler Council. He was also the past president of the Smith Woman's Softball League. Michael loved Softball, playing until he was 65. He also umpired for many years before and after his playing days. He was also an avid fan of the New York Mets, Rangers and Giants. Michael was the devoted husband of 62 years to Joanne Ryan. Loving father Michael (Lauren), Kevin (Dominique), and Christopher (Erin). Cherished brother to John, Thomas, Maureen Martyka, Theresa Fogt, and the late Eileen Bungarz. Doting grandfather to Kevin, Jenna, Brendan, Patrick, Joelle, Christopher, Michael, Donna, Sarah, Hannah, Michael, Matthew, Daniel and the late Tyler. Beloved great grandfather to Lacey and Asher. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:15 AM on Monday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church located at 5411 Amboy Road Staten Island, New York 10312. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island, NY. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturday, April 24, 2021, and Sunday, April 25, 2021 at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York. Please be mindful that due to the current State mandate, masks must be worn at all times and social distancing will be required when in the funeral home. A strict 50 person room policy is in effect. Please adhere to this policy so as to allow others to pay their respects. Due to current pandemic circumstances please note: We do not accept deliveries from outside vendors for bakery products, fruit baskets and floral arrangements. Floral arrangements can be purchased from our in house floral designers who work under the most stringent and sanitary conditions which include, temperature checks, mask wearing, distancing and protective clothing.
