Nettie Evans of Eltingville and long-time Staten Island resident passed away peacefully on February 1, 2022. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Francis Evans and the loving mother of Scott and Carol and their spouses, Susan and Ricardo. Nettie was also the proud grandmother of five grandchildren Melissa, Katherine, Robert, Michael, and Natalia. In addition, she was a loving great-grandmother to Joseph, Angelina, Sienna, and Colin. and was expecting her 5th great-grandchild in June. Nettie returned to school later in life and graduated in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in social work. She worked with the developmentally disabled at Willowbrook, Creedmor Psychiatric Center, and the Bronx Developmental Center. Nettie ended her career at the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility as a social worker when she retired in 2003. Nettie was very active in her community and was involved in various activities. She continued the work of Nancy Reagan by leading the Foster Grandparent Program, a program for older adults who wish to work with children in their community offering an opportunity to serve as mentors, tutors, and caregivers for children and youth with special needs, Nettie was a member of the Staten Island Symphony, St. Alban's Music Society, participated in Toastmasters, and was president of the PTA of P.S. 55 in Eltingville where she resided. She also ran the Veteran's Program at Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, was an officer of the AARP of the Tottenville Chapter, and participated in the organization of the Senior Olympics for many years. Nettie also had many interests and knew how to enjoy life. Whether she was traveling to Israel or Greece or even Atlantic City, she knew how to savor every moment. Besides her enjoyment of traveling, Nettie was a member of the Red Hat Society, an avid bowler, and enjoyed playing handball as a young girl growing up in Brooklyn. Friendship meant everything to Nettie. She prided herself on being a good friend and maintained many long-term friendships throughout her life She was always willing to go the extra mile for her friends and family. Nettie was loved and respected by many and will be missed by all. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 3, 2022, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and again from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2022 at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York. Interment will be on Saturday, February 5, 2022, leaving from John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc. at 10:30 a.m. and proceeding to Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
