Philip Gatto, 85, passed away on Monday, November 30, 2020 with his loving family by his side. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, spent most of his life there until settling in Staten Island (New Springville) in 2001. Philip proudly served his Country from 1959 to 1962 achieving the rank of Specialist. While living in Brooklyn, he was a longtime parishioner of St. Dominic Church, where he volunteered his time serving as an Usher and also belonged to the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Senior Club at St. Dominic Church and Regina Pacis Church. When moving to Staten Island, Philip became a parishioner of St. Thomas The Apostle Church. Philip worked as a custodial engineer for the former Bowery Savings Bank for many years, retiring in 1995. In his younger years, he was an avid bowler. He also loved playing cards - poker was his game - and enjoyed trips to Atlantic City. He and his wife travelled extensively, mostly enjoying cruises. Philip was also an acitve member of the Mt. Loretto Friendship Club where he enjoyed many long lasting friendships. What was most important to Philip was family. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who cherished time spent with family. He was the beloved husband to Margaret, who passed away in 2012. Loving father to Roe, Linda and Philip. Dear father-in-law to Christine. Devoted grandfather to Linda, Michael, Kristen, Philip, Joseph and Daniel and cherished great grandfather to Mekayla. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at the John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd. (at Eltingville Station), Staten Island, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at St Thomas the Apostle Church located at 50 Maguire Avenue Staten Island, New York 10309. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers donations in Philip's memory to Addeo Hospice Residence, 78 Meisner Ave. Staten Island, NY 10305 would be greatly appreciated. Please be mindful due to the current State mandate that a mask must be worn at all times in the funeral home and social distancing requirements must be followed during the services. Due to the current Pandemic a strict 30 person in room policy is in effect. Please adhere to this policy and allow others to pay their respects as well. Due to the current pandemic circumstances please note: We do not accept deliveries from outside vendors for bakery products, fruit baskets, and floral arrangements until further notice. Floral Arrangements can be purchased from our in house floral designers who work under the most stringent sanitary conditions which include temperature checks, mask wearing, distancing and protective clothing. We must protect the families we serve, our own families and staff who operate the funeral home.
