Joseph Martino

Joseph Martino (84) of Staten Island, NY passed away peacefully on February 12, 2017 at Wilkes Barre VA Medical, Wilkes Barre, PA surrounded by his children and granddaughter. Joseph was born in Brooklyn, NY to Gaetano (Tom) Martino and Josephina (Mignosi) Martino on May 18, 1932. In addition to being a Certified Mechanic for over 40 years, Joseph was a Golden Gloves Champion in the Middleweight Division while stationed at Reece Air Force Base in Lubbock, TX. He fought 3 professional fights before he retired. He was a veteran of The Korean War and served in the Air Force as an Airman First Class, and was awarded United States Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. Joseph always felt his children were his biggest achievements in life and enjoyed being with them and his grandchildren every chance he had. He loved to cook, attend sporting events and will always be known and loved for his great story telling ability. He was extremely proud to be a Veteran of the United States and loved his country. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his daughter Anna Marie Martino, and siblings, Jack, Thomas, Rosalie, Dominick, and Gaetano (Pete) Joseph is survived by his daughter Michele Yohey, White Haven, PA and her husband Richard, son, Joseph Martino JR, San Clemente, CA and his wife Holly Daughter Judy Vigil, Colorado Springs, CO and her husband Rick. Grandchildren, Jacqueline, Augusta, Carissa, Elijio, Ricardo Jr, Elicia, Brittany, Briele, Alexa, Nicholas and Morgan. In Lieu of flowers, the family has decided that Joseph would be honored if they helped fellow Veterans in their time of need. Donations will be accepted for: Wilkes Barre VA Medical Center in Memory of Joseph Martino. Checks should be written out to Wilkes Barre VA Medical Center and mailed to Michele Yohey 8 Middleburg Road White Haven, PA 18661. The family would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Paulino and the nurses and staff on the Hospice Floor at the Wilkes Barre VA for making Joseph's final moments peaceful and comfortable. Friends and Family may visit on Friday February 17, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 PM at John Vincent Scalia Home of Funerals Inc, 28 Eltingville Blvd. Staten Island, NY 10312. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 am Saturday February 18, 2017 at John Vincent Scalia Home of Funerals followed by a Military burial service at Moravian Cemetery.
