Margaret M. Smith

Margaret "Peggy" Smith passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at the age of 77. Peggy was born on April 14, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York, to Raymond Smith and Mary Timony. She graduated from Countess Moore High School in 1966 and pursued her calling in nursing at Kings County School of Nursing. She further advanced her training at Chicago Memorial Hospital, completing graduate studies in neurosurgical nursing. She worked at Kings County and Downstate Hospitals as a neurosurgical nurse while continuing her education at St. Joseph's College. Peggy received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Community Health and Human Services in 1995. A lifelong nurse, Peggy served others with compassion, grace, and unwavering kindness. Retirement did not slow her commitment to caring for others. She continued to use her nursing skills while working as a hospice nurse, then on to support and care for parishioners in her church community, as well as friends and family whenever they were in need. Peggy proudly called New York home all her life, yet she cherished every opportunity to travel and explore beyond it. She found joy in the quiet beauty of bird watching, in long dinners shared with friends, and in gathering with family to celebrate life's milestones. Her happiest moments were those spent surrounded by the people she loved most. Peggy was predeceased by her three older brothers, Warren David Smith, Raymond Patrick "Pat" Smith, and Garrett Anthony Smith Sr. She is survived by her younger sister, Christine Smith Rehm, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Though Peggy is no longer with us, the love she shared and the lives she touched will remain her lasting legacy. A Mass of Christian Rite will be offered on Tuesday March 10, 2026 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1091 Forest Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10310 at 11:00 am. Private Cremation to follow. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 9th, at Scalia Funeral Home from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. In the spirit of Peggy’s lifelong passion for caring for others, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Staten Island University Hospital Hospice Care or to a local food bank in her memory.
