Raymond Gundersen

Raymond H. Gundersen, 77, of Staten Island, NY, passed away unexpectedly on June 23, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of cherished memories and a life beautifully lived. Ray was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 16, 1949. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Ray dedicated himself to a lifetime of public service, enjoying a successful career as a Superintendent with the NYC MTA until his retirement in 2011. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his children, Kristen (Sal) and Michael (Bridget); and his three adored grandsons, Carlo, Blake, and Erik. Throughout their 50 years of marriage, Ray and Mary shared a lifetime of immeasurable love and devotion. Earlier this month, they celebrated their milestone 50th wedding anniversary in their favorite vacation destination, Aruba, celebrating the beautiful family they built together. Ray took great pride in everything he did. His meticulous nature was always on display through his exceptional craftsmanship, from building porches, decks, and bathrooms to replacing roofs. During his retirement, he found great joy in working alongside his children on their own home renovations, generously sharing his decades of accumulated knowledge and skill. Always ready for the next destination, Ray loved exploring the world with family and friends. In recent years�in addition to his many frequent trips to Aruba�he traveled across the globe, exploring London, Norway, Alaska, California, Iceland, Hawaii, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. He also possessed a passion for horse racing, golfing, and any activity centered around the water�whether it was spending afternoons in the pool with his wife and grandchildren, relaxing at the beach, fishing, boating, or even a few stints of sailing. Above all else, Ray was a dedicated family man. He leaves behind a proud, loving legacy, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew him. Service Information Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation and services on June 28 from 1:00pm�4:00pm at Scalia Funeral Home.
